Couples Counselling Training
Sarah Demaree MSc, PTSTA (P)
Paul McManus PG.dip, PG.cert
In training to become a counsellor or psychotherapist, most of the focus is on learning how to work with individuals; there may be a module or weekend that deals with couples counselling but more often than not, all that gives you is a bit of theory and not much else.
The training we offer is designed to give you the tools and the confidence to either start working with couples or to enhance your existing practice. Our courses are practical and based very firmly on what we have found to be most effective with the clients we work with. You will learn about different theoretical models, but only in as much as how you can make practical use of them in the consulting room.
If you do choose to train with us you will see just how much we love working with couples. Our hope is that you'll love it too.
Training & Workshops
Introduction to Working with Couples
A six-day certificate course aimed at practicing therapists who want to start working with couples or who want to enhance, refresh or expand their existing couples therapy practice. Applicants for the course must have completed 100 hours of supervised counselling practice or 100 supervised hours in a similar field, eg coaching, organisational, etc. (this need not be with couples).
There are many different methods of working with couples; in this course, which will have a strongly practical orientation, we will focus on Transactional Analysis (TA) and well-known TA-adjacent approaches, eg Imago Relationship Therapy, Bader Pearson Developmental Model, etc. We will cover everything from the initial intake and contracting to negotiating endings.
You will learn how to work with the issues most frequently encountered in couples counselling, including betrayal, sexuality and desire, and high conflict couples. You will also learn to identify and work effectively with what is probably the most commonly occurring and most frequently missed issue that brings couples into counselling - neurodivergence. We will present you with our own model, specifically developed to work with neurodiverse couples.
You will have the opportunity to take part in experiential learning with the course leaders and fellow participants and by the end of the course we hope you will come away with the confidence and enthusiasm to grow your couples practice. Completing the course will count for 36 hours of CPD or, for TA trainees, 36 hours of advanced psychotherapy training.
Cost:
£660 for the full 36 hours of CPD.
To reserve your place or ask any questions, please drop us an email and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
